Carolyn
Burke
Head. Regulatory, Compliance and International, RBC
Carolyn is responsible for leading RBC’s enterprise regulatory payments council for first line Compliance in Digital, Payments & Cards, and for RBC’s credit and debit card businesses in the US and Caribbean, and merchant acquiring in the Caribbean. Carolyn Burke joined RBC in 1985 and has occupied a wide range of positions, from product development and marketing, to sales, market management and operations. Her career has focused both on payments and online banking, as well as business banking where she led an operations team of 1,000 people.

Carolyn Burke has served on several national and international boards including the Canadian Bankers’ Association Senior Payments Committee, the Board of Directors for the Canadian Payments Association, Interac, Acxsys, and CertaPay, as well as senior committees for Mondex.

Carolyn Burke holds a Masters degree in Business Administration from McGill University and has obtained the Chartered Director designation from The Directors College.

WHY THE AWARDS COMMITTEE SELECTED HER NOMINATION

Every year, Women in Payments has presented an award to a female executive who has enjoyed a distinguished career in the payments industry. This year recognized the career of Carolyn Burke who has been a tireless advocate for the advancement of payments, and who has supported and contributed to the dynamic evolution of the payments industry. Carolyn’s progressive career has focused both on payments and online banking, including smart cards, merchant acquiring, electronic payments as well as business banking, and she has held roles in product management, marketing, sales, operations and regulatory compliance. Few can surpass Carolyn’s depth of knowledge of banking and payments and she is active participant both inside and outside of her own organization.

A long-standing member of the Canadian Banker Association’s Payment Committee, Carolyn chairs the CPA’s Advisory Committee where she plays a vital role in leading the initiative to modernize core payments clearing and settlement systems. In her current role, she is credited with helping to chart RBCs digital future and informing the development of the regulatory environment for the new digital world. Women in Payments and the Awards Committee were delighted to present Our Distinguished Payments Professional Award this year to Carolyn Burke, Head of Regulatory Compliance and International for RBCS’s Digital Payments and Cards business.
