Lisa
Shields
CEO, FI.SPAN
Lisa Shields is the CEO of FI.SPAN, a technology startup dedicated to uniting banking services with FinTech offerings.

In 2000, Lisa founded Hyperwallet, guiding it from startup to the leading international payments processor for business to consumer mass payouts.

Earlier in her career, Lisa managed payments acceptance and risk management teams for high-volume online merchants.

A firm believer in inclusive commerce, Lisa is driven by the social and economic imperatives that shape global financial technologies. She speaks frequently and passionately on the importance of low-cost, compliant payments, and is always looking for new ways to effectively service the world’s underbanked population.

Lisa is currently a member of Finance Canada’s FinPay committee, where she advocates for a national real-time infrastructure that is inclusive of non-FI entities.

WHY THE AWARDS COMMITTEE SELECTED HER NOMINATION

Lisa is recognized across the industry for her intelligence, her passion to build a business, and for her character: particularly her grit and perseverance.
Described by her nominees as a tireless advocate for the industry, Lisa has helped to advance Canadian and global payments systems. As an MIT trained engineer, Lisa designed her own low-cost solution for cross-border and global payments, and built a company to deliver that solution on a global scale. Today, Hyperwallet Systems Inc. delivers payments in over 170 countries, supporting over 150 different currencies, and 19 languages. Overcoming adversity and the tech crash of the early 2000s, the committee were impressed by Lisa’s ability to persevere through course changes and other obstacles, proving the importance of business agility and iteration. As a member of Finance Canada’s FinPay Community and as an active mentor to young technology entrepreneurs, Lisa is now the founder and CEO of a new fintech start-up – FI Span. We look forward to continuing to watch this innovator take flight and are delighted to name Lisa as our 2016 Women in Payments Award Winner for Innovation.
